Clearing The Clutter After The Kids Leave Home

As you navigate the mixed emotions that come with your child leaving home, it’s important to focus some of your energy on this new season of your life. Whether that means decluttering, redecorating, or repurposing a bedroom, consider recreating your space to work for you. Get motivated to take that first step and involve your child in the process so they will still feel welcome and excited to be home.

Focus on one space at a time. Decluttering your home can lighten your mood and simplify your life. Begin by picking one area of your home that will give you the most satisfaction to declutter. Perhaps it’s the kitchen, office, or child’s bedroom. Allow the emotions to come and go as you sift through years of clutter. Remember, these are just things and too many things will take away from what matters.

Break down the area into manageable chunks. Decluttering the entire kitchen or a huge closet might seem overwhelming. Give yourself the freedom to focus on a few cabinets a day or one side of the closet at a time, to stay motivated. Before you know it, you will see the fruits of your labor, which will give you some momentum to keep going.

Decide what you want to keep, donate, or throw out. This transition is an opportunity to clear out your stuff and get more clarity. Begin by emptying out the space. Grab some trash bags and purge what you don’t want or need. Set aside items you wish to donate. Purchase some cute baskets or bins to house like items, or add glide-out shelving in cabinets to keep items accessible. Store things in more efficient and beautiful ways.

Take time to think about how you will use your new-found space. Although you might be anxious to convert a child’s bedroom into your new home office or craft room, give yourself time to think about it. Your kids will still come home, and they may even bring a friend or two along for a visit. It might make sense to redecorate with this scenario in mind. Depending on the size of your home, your new space may have more than one purpose.

Embrace change. This time of your life will likely have some ups and downs, as change is difficult for most people. Be patient with yourself as you forge ahead in this new direction. Remember, decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of stuff, it’s also about getting rid of the old and embracing the new.
